Content: Artist’s Biography Dene Stephens glass art has been on exhibit in solo and group exhibitions in a museum and galleries throughout the Midwest, including the Glassworks Gallery in Louisville, KY, and the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, in Indiana, Image One Gallery in Henderson, KY, Moon River II Gallery in Newburgh, IN, and Synchronicity Gallery (now the Art Colony Gallery) in Evansville, IN. His work has also been exhibited at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science. Dene has twice received the demonstration award from a juried panel at the Audubon Arts Festival in Henderson, KY, in 2003, and 2005. In 2001, Dene was awarded a work study scholarship at Penland School of Crafts in Penland, N.C., and studied with Ellie Burke. While in North Carolina, he participated in a group student exhibition. In addition to attending the Penland School, he began his glass education by learning scientific glassblowing from Jay Bardole at Vincennes University in Indiana in 1998. In 2004, Mr. Stephens was one of nine students selected globally to study Venetian flamework under the finest technical flameworker in the world, Cesaré Toffolo, at the prestigious Corning School of Glass in Corning, N.Y. In 2006, Dene was awarded an Individual Project Grant by the Indiana Arts Commission to create a series of vessels using some traditional Venetian methods. Also in 2006, he received an Honorable Mention from the juror at the “Working Together” exhibition, and third place in the 3-dimensional category at “Art in the City”, both put on by the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana. In 2007, the Arts Council also put on a group exhibition at the Evansville Chamber of Commerce in which Dene participated. He and his wife, Doni, were in a dual artist show at the Oaklyn Library, in 2007. In April 2007, he received a first place in the 3-D category at the “Art in the City” exhibition. Additionally in 2007, he received a first place award for his contribution to the “Working Together” exhibition. Dene was commissioned to craft the Mayor’s Awards given at the 2007 Arts Educator Award banquet. In December of 2007, Dene had a piece accepted into the prestigious 40th Annual Mid-States Craft Exhibition at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History, & Science. He is currently working toward opening a glass gallery in the Art’s District called “Glowing Sands Glass Art,” expected to open at the end of May 2008. Expression Expanded Using modern materials and equipment with traditional tools, and a Venetian influence transferred from the furnace to the torch, a unique new style of glass art has emerged. Still in its infancy and led by its progenitor, Cesaré Toffolo, this form of glass art is a variation of “flameworking” or “lampworking.” It differs in that the artist uses a torch to heat hard glass (called borosilicate) to create technique-driven vessels or sculptures. It possesses a fascinating and individual set of characteristics, most notably its ability to heat and cool quickly with minimal stress. Great detail may be achieved at the torch. I strongly relate to the emphasis that the old Venetian Glass Houses placed on mastery of the necessary processes; however I do appreciate having full creative license to explore individual ideas. My compositions are manifestations of having definite characteristics of both right and left brain. The mixed media works tend to narrate, being more of the subconscious, while the Venetian inspired vessels are a concentrated effort to pay homage to the masters. My expression through glass continues to be both challenging and enlightening. I often work in distinct modes, not only as a matter of necessity, but of nature as well. These modes of production are dictated by faith, family, weather, current events, personal status quo, and life-altering experiences. Capturing the essence of these is an outlet for which I am eternally grateful. L Dene Stephens II
